AOF June General Meeting, Sunday, June 10, 1:30-4PM: Gordy Slack on "The Battle Over the Meaning of Everything"

2007 Jun 10 - 1:30pm
2007 Jun 10 - 4:00pm
Etc/GMT-8

Description:
Author Gordy Slack will discuss his latest book, "The Battle over the Meaning of Everything," a perspective on the "culture wars" through the eyes of a journalist who has been reporting for Salon and others on the evolution vs. ID (intelligent design) debate, which rarely rises above cultural and political caricature. Slack discovered in Dover, PA that the matter is much more nuanced and interesting than a Punch and Judy Show. Across America "families are pitted against each other, towns are split in two, and the ideological battle being waged has consequences far beyond what's taught in high school science classes or even its political fallout." The real battle, Slack has found, is over the questions of what being a person is all about, what being an American is all about, and what life on earth is all about. In short, it is a battle over the meaning of, well, everything.
Slack will be bringing copies of his just-released book to autograph and personalize for those who would like to purchase a copy directly ($20, cash only please).
