SUMMARY:Liam McDaid: The Hubble Constant Controversy
DESCRIPTION:The Hubble Constant Controversy\nThe Hubble constant is the most inconstant constant you are likely to meet. It’s also one of the most important numbers in cosmology. It tells us how fast the universe is expanding\, which can tell us much else — like\, the age of the universe\, its history\, and possible new particles or forms of dark energy. The name comes from UChicago alum Edwin Hubble\, who first estimated it in 1929. He pegged it at about 500 km/s/Mpc (kilometers per second per megaparsec)\, roughly 160 km/s per million light-years. But despite a century of astronomical measurements and calculations\, scientists still can’t agree on the exact value. \nOur speaker will describe the controversy in laymen’s terms. From the beginning\, where researchers had values that differed by as much as 100% to the slight but important gap between methods today\, the debate over the value of the Hubble Constant rages. Find out why this is so. Find out why it matters. \nSpeaker Liam McDaid is professor of Physics\, Astronomy & Geology at the Sac City College campus\, Bachelor of Science in Astronomy (Penn State)\, Master of Science in Astronomy (New Mexico State)\, Master of Arts in History (Sam Houston State)\, Master of Science in Physics (New Mexico State)\, and a total brainbox. Since growing up in Philadelphia\, Liam always had a passion for astronomy. At New Mexico State\, he was fortunate enough to share an office with Clyde Tombaugh\, the discoverer of the planet Pluto! In graduate school he moonlighted part-time as a stand-up comic — “until I had a bottle thrown at me and decided to stop\,” he says. Now Liam will guide you through peaks and precipices of the starry wisdom. Don’t miss this presentation. \nEvent open to the public. Free parking in the lot. OK to BYO snack/beverage\, or goodies to share if you wish. Water provided. No entrance fee\, but Donations gratefully accepted.

SUMMARY:Irish Music Concert with Sean O’Brien
DESCRIPTION:You remember Sean O’Brien\, right? The Robert Ingersoll guy\, the Poe guy\, right? Wrong. He has talents beyond that. Now he will entertain us with masterful skill on the folk guitar\, Irish pennywhistle and the bodhran\, an ancient Irish drum. It will be a musical concert like none other. It will get your Irish up. He created Every Corner Productions\, which includes: “The Portable Poe Show” and “Bob: The Words of Col. Robert Green Ingersoll”\, one-man shows he performs in local schools and other venues such as at the Sacramento History Museum in Old Sacramento this coming fall. \nNo entrance fee for this and free parking (you are so lucky); donations gratefully accepted. SUMMARY:Help AOF Feed the Hungry
DESCRIPTION:Davis Community Meal project\nThe Davis Community Meal project serves meals to the hungry\, the poor\, the indigent\, the outcast. It happens in bucolic Davis city\, so near to us\, where compassionate citizens have developed a secular solution for the problem of hunger\, and need our help. \nSo join us in this effort. Your reward will be an opportunity to meet new minds and hobnob with your freethought friends\, a likely free meal\, jazzy music\, and the rosey hearts-glow of benevolence. Also\, seriously\, it’s a blast! \nCooking? Dish washing? Pshaw\, none required. The Davis Community Meals team will perform all the food prep and kitchen work. Our job is simply to set up chairs and tables\, serve\, smile\, put things away at the end\, and clean a bit (with a minimum of mopping). Extra points if you can arrive for setup\, but if you can’t\, that’s OK\, any help is good help. Setup begins about 4:30 p.m.\, food service at about 5:45. At 6:30 we clean up\, leaving the hall as we found it. \nFor details\, please see Davis Community Meals. For a map to the site\, see: St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. (Yes\, a church hall\, so what?)

One with low-acid seas and no nasty chunks of carbon settling in your lungs. Well\, SMUD’s 2030 zero–carbon plan aims to decarbonize its energy supply\, boost air quality\, and ensure affordable rates while leaving no community behind – the most ambitious goal of any large utility in the United States! A brag\, but  it’s true. \nLearn how SMUD is helping to position the Sacramento Region as a destination choice for forward-thinking\, environmentally conscious businesses and a model for others around the nation to follow. \nSMUD Board Member\, Director Gregg Fishman and his SMUD support staff will tell you about the focus on 4 areas.\n* Natural gas generation repurposing\n* Proven clean technology\n* New technology and business models\n* Financial impacts and options \nCool\, right? Gregg Fishman has been a clean energy advocate for much of his career. As a former SMUD employee\, he promoted wind and solar energy when they were in their infancy. At the California Independent System Operator\, he led public engagement efforts supporting new wind energy farms in California. As President of the SMUD Board in 2018\, he led the utility in passing its Integrated Resource Plan\, hailed by the California Energy Commission as “… an ambitious road map for lowering greenhouse gas emissions in the Sacramento region.” Attend this meeting and you will breatge easier.

SUMMARY:Doctor R Snick: Fascinating and Horrible Elixirs
DESCRIPTION:Fascinating and horrible Elixirs from the 1800s to the late 1940s\nPrepare to be shocked\, amazed\, entertained\, and possibly grossed out. Prepare to journey into the past with the good Dr. R. Snick\, and learn about how sometimes science and quackery combine and have love-children. \nThe good Doctor R. Snick returns to shed light on the origins of the patent medicine shows that began in England then spread in the US like that unfortunate rash. You know the one. \nYou’ll discover some of the early energy drinks and the drugged sodas of the 1940’s. You will see a bottle whose elixir was created by the corporation Lily\, an early energy drink sure to pump up your blood! These medicines offered false cures. False\, we stress. Don’t try them please. But they were entertaining to a gullible nation before the arrival of radio\, film and the FDA. \nAndrei Pischainikoff\, AKA Doctor R. Snick\, is a sideshow performer and fan of history\, fraud\, hoaxes and Memento Mori. Andrei will tell you about some of the curious and unsettling things that questionable science and quackery sold to the public for over a hundred years. He began his journey speaking about 19th and 20th century quackery (fake medicine) and oddities in 2022. He now delivers captivating shows about patent medicines\, snake oils\, medicine shows and sticky oddities while focusing on the audience’s interests. \nThis event is our gift to you. You don’t need to get us anything. \nDiscover much more about Andrei at doctorrsnick.com. \n \n-Event is open to the public. -Free parking in the lot.\n-Ok to BYO snack/beverage — or to share if you wish.\n-AOF will provide cool\, clear water.\n-No entrance fee; Donations gratefully accepted.

DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, February 22\, 2026\, 02:00pm – 04:00pm\n\n\n\n\nLocation :  Reason Center\, 1300 Ethan Way\, Ste 675\, Sac.\, map \n\nPresenter Anne M. The Railroad (not a literal railroad) brought together a diverse group of people in the fight against slavery and slavers. From the deep south\, the journey to Canada and sometimes to Mexico (yes Mexico abolished slavery in 1937\, and if you didn’t know\, shame on you for sleeping in Mrs. Grundy’s history class). Strictly speaking it’s not an AOF event\, but AOF helped found the local gala\, and continues to support it and commend it to all our friends in the Sacramento community of reason. Because science! And what’s science but reason in the trenches? \nThe main speaker will be Rick Grosberg of the University of California\, Davis. “Throughout my career\, my research has centered on the major evolutionary transitions in the history of life\, from DNA to genes\, from unicellular to multicellular organisms\, and from families to complex societies of multicellular organisms. I’m especially interested in the mechanisms that regulate the inevitable conflicts of interest between different levels of biological organization. I’m also fascinated and attracted by the history of ideas\, and — as a marine evolutionary biologist — to Darwin’s notoriously complicated and misunderstood relationship with the sea. Over the last few years\, my research has inescapably emphasized the impacts of climate change and other human activities on the ecological and evolutionary resilience of marine populations and ecosystems. And\, most recently\, I have explored the causes and consequences of differing patterns of biodiversity across the major realms of life.” \nFor background on this mind-growing event\, visit https://darwinday.org/\, the international website. \nHow to attend:\nPlease get a ticket. It’s not pricey\, and this is no time to grinch. Price is just $25 general\, $20 for museum members\, or $10 if you have a Student ID. Ticket link: https://visitmosac.org/darwin-day/. As a bonus you’ll get sweet\, sweet birthday cake.
