Sunday, February 08, 2015, 02:00pm - 04:30pm
Location :  John Smith Hall, La Sierra Community Center, 5325 Engle Road, Carmichael

Elderly DarwinFor the 18th epic year, Sacramento science advocates join with civic groups to bring you the coolest go-to event ever of science and human reason, the fabulous Sacramento Darwin Day Birthday Gala. This one marks C. Darwin's 206th birthday. And he can still shoot hoops.

As usual, it all will happen in the spacious John Smith Hall of the La Sierra Community Center, in Carmichael.

What is Darwin Day? It is a science-rush like no other, an annual celebration of scientific inquiry honoring of the life and work of the great Charles Darwin (b. 12 February 1809), sponsored worldwide by community and educational groups. To learn more of this mind-growing event, please visit the International Darwin Day Foundation.

Doors will open at 2 o’ the clock, post meridiem, and the main program begins 2:30. Arrive early, tour the display tables, visit the vendors, scoop some science swag, then find a comfy seat. Relax and enjoy the opening entertainment, live music by Scientific Jam. Then this year's main man: Mario Livio, Ph.D., astrophysicist and author, well-loved lecturer, math nerd, natty dresser, and all-round clever fellow. His topic? "Charles Darwin: Curiosity, Blunders, and Brilliance".

If curious, check out the good doc's personal website. Or just read what our peerless publicity team found:

Dr. Livio is Senior Astrophysicist at Space Telescope Science Institute. Mario Livio’s latest book is Brilliant Blunders. Of it, Martin Rees, the UK’s Astronomer Royal and author of From Here to Infinity: A Vision for the Future of Science, says, “Mario Livio sets the discoveries of five great scientists who were also remarkable personalities in their social context, showing how they emerged from confusion and controversy. His archival research allows him to debunk several myths that have been given currency through less thorough biographies. You don’t need to be a scientist to be fascinated by this scholarly, insightful and beautifully written book.”

As clearly evidenced by his October 8, 2014 discussion with Martin Makary MD on C-SPAN 2’s BOOKTV program, Dr. Livio’s Darwin Day presentation, which may or may not be based on Brilliant Blunders, promises to be entertaining, fascinating and informative.

Dr. Mario Livio is non-symmetrical

Entertaining, fascinating and informative! Don't miss this singular event. Rounding it up will be more entertainment, snacks, and of course, yummy birthday cake. (It is Chucky D's birthday, after all.)

Admission, as always, is just $7.50 in advance (thru Feb 1), $10.00 at the door, or with your valid Student ID, $5.00. To purchase or for more information, please click to the main event website, http://sacdarwinday.info/.
