Addiction Recovery: A Path Without 12 Steps
Clear and Equal Choice of Support: It's the Law!
Secular options do exist for addiction recovery programs, but most jurisdictions do not offer them, though every federal court and every state supreme court has ruled on this issue in a perfect storm of judicial unanimity: all have stated that 12-step support programs (Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, etc.) are intrinsically religious. Blind to this, lower courts and local agencies blithely continue to order, compel, or coerce citizens into religious support without a clear/equal choice of a secular option, though a well-established secular option IS available -- and most of them should know.
LifeRing Secular Recovery, one of the most popular secular options, is based on developing, refining, and sharing personal strategies for continued abstinence and crafting a rewarding life in recovery. In short, LifeRing is about being sober, secular, and self-directed.
Byron Kerr, Board Chair of the nonprofit LifeRing Secular Recovery, will explain how LifeRing works and how it is working to make secular recovery options available. His talk will be followed by questions and answers. Refreshments will be available. (No hard stuff, smarty-pants, why do you even ask?)
