The murder of George Floyd is a loud call to action. People who practice secular values (respect, honesty, fairness, kindness, diligence, and more) feel the need to stop police brutality and improve the criminal justice system. Madison Paige, a Washington DC political organizer, is working with other organizations to create model legislation that will go a long way toward addressing police misconduct and police brutality.
People all over the country can use this model legislation to provide a framework for autonomous (and confidential) reporting, investigations, and sanctioning. It is a legal framework to get misbehaving cops out of circulation. We cannot expect progress on this issue until and unless citizens and law enforcement officers have NO FEAR of repercussions from reporting problem actors and behaviors. This bill will facilitate that.
It is our duty as humanists and secular people to stand up for fair treatment. The way police are treating people of color is unjustifiable and grossly unfair. Reform is long overdue, and this work can be a roadmap for that reform.
